Lisa Daugherty lives in Attalla and was employed as a care technician and her elderly victim was a resident of the Oak Landing.
Lisa Daugherty is charged with the financial exploitation of a former Oak Landing Assisted Living resident.
Attorney General Steve Marshall announced the arrest of Lisa Daugherty. Lisa was arrested on a warrant by agents from the Attorney General’s Medicaid Fraud Control Unit, accompanied by Boaz police, Etowah County Sheriff’s deputies, and the Etowah County District Attorney’s Office.
Lisa Daugherty Charges
Lisa is charged with two counts of first-degree financial exploitation of the elderly resident: one for $8 million in currency and another for $1 million in real estate.
Lisa was booked into the Etowah County Jail Wednesday afternoon. And is being held on $1 million cash bond.
Two other women, Lisa’s 35 years old daughter, Brooke Crawford, and her ex-partner, Jerenita Johnson, were also charged with receiving first-degree stolen property in total of $600,000.
The investigation by Marshall’s Medicaid Fraud Control Unit followed a referral from the US Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of Alabama.
Marshall’s office said in a statement Wednesday that, “No further information about the investigation or the alleged crimes of the defendants other than those listed in the arrest warrants can be released at this time”.
Lisa remained incarcerated on a $1 million bond, online records show. She faces a jail term between 2 and 20 years if she is convicted, as well as up to $60,000 in fines.
Crawford and Johnson, who were held on a $5,000 bond, also face up to 20 years and $30,000 in fines if convicted.
No information was released about Lisa’s alleged victim, but a Marshall spokesperson identified her as a woman when contacted by Post.
Lisa was named in a four-count federal indictment in 2019, but court records cited by AL.com indicate the case was later dismissed.
AL.com reported in October 2019 that at the time, the former supervisor at the facility was charged with wire fraud, money laundering, filing a false tax return, and theft of government property for allegedly embezzling funds from the victim to pay for his lavish lifestyle, which includes buying multiple vacation homes.
Court documents showed that Lisa obtained the power of attorney from the victim before arranging a transfer to Oak Landing.
According to authorities, she began transferring the victim’s assets to herself in January 2017, eventually purchasing various homes, cars and to pay for her daily living expenses.
