Dolores Avery is the mother of Steven Avery, who is an American convicted murderer from Manitowoc County, Wisconsin.
Steven Avery has previously been wrongly convicted in 1985 of sexual assault and attempted murder.

After serving 18 years of a 32-year sentence, he was exonerated through DNA testing and released in 2003, only to be charged with murder again two years after.Following his 2003 release, Avery filed a $36 million lawsuit against Manitowoc County, his former sheriff, and his former district attorney for wrongful conviction and imprisonment.
In November 2005, with his civil lawsuit still pending, he was arrested for the murder of Wisconsin photographer Teresa Halbach.
In 2007 he was convicted and sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole. The conviction was confirmed by higher courts.
Avery’s 2003 exoneration sparked widespread discussion about Wisconsin’s criminal justice system.
The Criminal Justice Reform Bill, enacted in 2005, implemented reforms aimed at preventing future wrongful convictions.

Kathleen Zellner, attorney for Steven Avery, shared the news Thursday afternoon on Twitter.
Kathleen Zellner said “Fate has dealt another cruel blow to Steven Avery, just before his birthday today”.
His story appeared in the Netflix documentary series “Making a Murderer,” which cast doubt on the motives of the police investigating Halbach’s death and left many viewers with the impression that Avery and his nephew, Brendan Dassey, were convicted unfairly. Dolores Avery was featured in the documentary series.
Avery, who has said that he is innocent of Halbach’s murder, is awaiting a decision in his case from the Wisconsin Court of Appeals.
