Cody George Frayne Death – Death: On September 27, 2021, Cody George Frayne’s demise was made known to us through various tributes posted across the social media.
Commander Cody George Frayne passed away yesterday at the age of 77. Andy Stein got his bandmates to reunite for a performance on A Prairie Home Companion back in 2001.
Commander Cody & HIS LOST PLANET AIRMEN got their start in 1963 when John Tichy and George Frayne met while working in a fraternity kitchen at the University of Michigan. They played together in a number of bands before forming Commander Cody & His Lost Planet Airmen (named after the 1950 movie) in 1967. Of up to 36 members in the original group, the few who made the move to San Francisco in 1968 were Frayne, Tichy, Bill Kirchen, and Billy C. Farlow. Lance Dickerson and Buffalo Bruce Barlow joined the group in time to record their first album for Paramount Records, Lost in the Ozone, which included their hit “Hot Rod Lincoln.” After Bobby Black and Andy Stein came on board, the band recorded Hot Licks, Cold Steel and Trucker’s Favorites and Country Casanova, which featured “Smoke that Cigarette,” a Tex Williams swing favorite that cracked the country charts. Although their fourth album, Live from Deep in the Heart of Texas, was featured in Rolling Stone’s best 100 albums of all time, the group disbanded in 1977. Black, Barlow, and Frayne formed the New Commander Cody Band, which toured and recorded together off and on until the mid-’80s. In the early ’90s, MCA re-released the band’s Paramount records, as well as The Very Best of CCHLPA, on CD. The band is: George Frayne (piano & drums), John Tichy (guitar), Bill Kirchen (guitar), Andy Stein (sax & fiddle), Billy C. Farlow (vocals), Lance Dickerson (drums), Bruce Barlow (bass), and Bobby Black (steel guitar).
